Is plain steel okay sprocket material for sea water screen?

Dear Sir,
Can I use mild steel material for making a sprocket for traveling screen of sea water intake for power plants?
The OD of sprocket is 1120mm +-. The thickness is 50+mm.
Please advise...

Thanks & Best Regards,

Hi, Mar.

It's only okay if you have a secondary screen in place to capture the chunks of corroded sprocket :-)

Seriously, if you do a real good paint job on the sprocket, and then attach sacrificial zinc anodes, it might be okay. It would be better to galvanize it before painting, and then add sacrificial anodes.
