Electroless nickel microscopic photos

December 10, 2010

hi every body
I am working on electroless nickel coating for my master project
I plated some SS plates with electroless nickel and I tried to see the plating under microscope without etching.
I saw some shapes and some regions with no shape it was like sands particles. I had read that electroless structure is a little microcrystalline and a little amorphous but I saw some black spots but I don't think these spots are voids or porosity because if we consider the mechanism of plating process and plating procedure and according to literature this kind of plating approximately have no porosity. after that I took plated parts and put them in a bath of water and salt (NaCl) and some HCl acid and heated the bath till boiling for 1 hour one of the parts turned dull and had tiny circles on the surface.
I hope any body can provide me with some photos for electroless plating under microscope and I will highly appreciate your help.

What is your mounting method, your rough sanding method and your steps of polish?
