Appearance Specifications for Decorative Chrome Plating

December 3, 2010

We build limos and many of our customers want chrome added to the cars.
We remove, or send new parts to chrome plating job shops.
Is there a appearance standard that is accepted for "show chrome"
We spec 2 layers of nickel, and I have read your introduction to Chrome Plating.

When we reject parts it is always a battle with the supplier to rework the parts.
Much of the chrome is at eye level, and we do not allow pits/dirt in the finished product.

Thus the reason for my question about appearance standard.

You put the QC standards in the contract and the plater has the choice of not accepting the job, or accepting the job or countering with a higher price. If it is accepted, then he must produce parts to that quality.
With nothing in the contract, you are at the mercy of negotiations.

There are at least two options.
1- Have some sample plaques plated some Ok some not and use them as reference for acceptance or cause of rejection per your QC.
2- Use commercially available finish plaques electroformed from masters approved by the US Standards Office.
