Black Tendrils on Diamond Cut Aluminium Surface

November 25, 2010

I am the QC director for a UK Hi Fi speaker company that prides itself on the quality of its products.
We are developing an new range of products using diecast aluminium with a diamond cut high reflective surface. However we are now seeing black tendrils developing on the surface of diecast aluminium ADC12, after diamond machining and clear lacquering. Has anybody experience of this and how to overcome it?

A guess, I would check to see it the cutting fluid was truly compatible with the particular aluminum that you are using.

Could this be filiform corrosion ? - If it occurs after lacquering.

I would like to thank both James Watts and Richard Guise for their replies. It does seem to be filiform corrosion. Now we know what it is we can begin to deal with it.
