Plating onto hard chrome

hi
may I get your help regarding the hard chrome plating. I have to know what type of plating can be used on hard chrome. we have a piston ring the first layer is hard chrome. and second layer looks like bright tin or white zinc. we already tried the bright tin and white zinc on hard chrome. none of them can plate on hard chrome. so, would you tell me what kind of plating can be plated on hard chrome.

K. regards
Sasan

Hi, Sasan.

I am finding your situation or your description very puzzling. Are you reverse engineering someone else's piston rings but you don't have the test instruments to determine what metals they used? Or are you trying to make your rings simply look like someone else's rings with no concern for function? -- it doesn't matter to you whether you plate tin or zinc or whatever onto these rings? :-)

I suspect that the top layer was not applied by electroplating but by a PVD process. Or it may even be a diffusion process, with something impregnating the hard chrome. More info please.
