Plating black cast iron stove grids to a different color.

Dear Mr. Crichton,

My wife and I just purchased a new free standing gas range/oven. The range grids on the top of the stove, which are subjected to the direct gas flame of the stove, are a very ugly basic black cast iron which my wife hates. The black actually is overwhelming. She would like to have all the pieces plated in a finish that would match a satin nickel. It does not have to be nickel just look pretty close to it.

Any suggestions that you could give to me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Ned Hager

Hi, Ned.

It's possible that they are bare cast iron, but I doubt it; they are probably porcelain coated. They could be reporcelained in a lighter color, I assume.

Individual parts are extremely costly to plate or porcelain coat. Your wife is very probably not the first to have this thought. Check with the Mfg to see what options they might have. If they have one, it will be quicker, less hassle and cheaper.

Paint it with aluminum powder based paints-some sorts are very durable and heat resistant(up to 600 C),all other solutions are much more expensive.Hope it helps and good luck!

If you try the high temp paint route, try it on one burner and keep it for a couple of months before doing any more. One or two days is not a realistic test considering the replacement costs.
