Salt spray fail for SUS416 by 12hours

September 12, 2010

as subtitle
the SUS 416 can't pass the Salt spray test by 12 hours but 303,304 is ok.
why the 416 can't pass the test?
Is salt spray unsuitable for SUS 400series but 300 series is ok? our product is machined 416 bar for lathe machine . the result after H/T is the same with no H/T and passivated.

Roger,
Not all stainless steels are created equal. 300 grades tend to have more Chromium than 400 grades, and also some Nickel content that 400 grades lack, both of which contribute to improved corrosion resistance.

Salt spray is suitable for any grade but your expectations for how many hours it will last have to adjust for the grade you're using. 416 with heat treating and passivating will give you better salt spray results than 416 without, but 416 will NEVER match the corrosion resistance of 304.
