What vapors cause red rust in zinc electroplate?
I have a zinc plated small part that is a component of a mattress cover. The plated parts are fine with a shelf life of a year in normal storage, but after attachment to the foam, fire resistant treated mattress cover, the zinc components exhibit red rust within 4 weeks. What constituent(s) typically cause this in packaged products?

Obviously chemical vapors from products in the mattress are causing the rusting and/or a change to a different environment from how the parts were stored. In order to determine a little more about this it would be necessary to know what thickness of zinc was applied as well as the type of conversion coating that was applied.
