What is the electrolyte for making black marks on stainless steel?

I have used NaCl, HCl, KCl and copper sulphate ⇦this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] as electrolytes and can get nice deep etch but no colour. Does anybody know the right electrolyte?

Try to change to AC current .
