Stop copper from going green but retain tarnished look

I have a copper plated sign that I plan to tarnish until it is not shiny. Then I want to clear coat it so it does not go entirely green over the years. Kind of a rustic look...
I am a cabinet maker and am very familiar with clear coats for wood and raw steel but I have never used copper before and wonder if it reacts differently. Can you recommend any type of clear coat ? I as thinking car paint clearcoat but I don't know if the make a clear primer.

Try Everbrite [a finishing.com supporting advertiser] coating, or you can use special hardware lacquer. Incralac this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] may be good option too.Hope it helps and good luck!
