A chemical reaction question
January 19, 2010
Dear experts,
Can you please share your experience for below equation?
In which condition below reaction will happen?
6(CH3CH2OH) + 2Al = 2(CH3CH2O)3Al +3H2
And how about the stability of (CH3CH2O)3 Al ?
Any more possible info?
m Thanks

Hi, Ahmad. You have presented this equation totally free of context, so I don't have any idea where you are trying to go with it. but according to "Zen and the Art of the Alcohol Stove", aluminum is a functional container material for holding grain alcohol during burning. So you probably must be very patient to see the reaction you describe. Please describe the real world situation involving your equation. Thanks.

Aluminum ethoxide is formed at high temperature in the presence of catalysts.
Room temperature reaction would be either nonexistent or so small that it would take superior equipment to detect it.
If you had it, it should be quite stable at room temp and pressure.
PS, by convention, the formula is written with the metal in front of the ethoxide radical, IE: AL comes first.
