Laser marking cracks ceramic tools

January 12, 2010

We are facing failure on ceramic (ZTP zirconia) tools: they are to be subjected to laser marking and the marking always generates a network of microcracks on the treated surfaces (visible starting from 500X magnification by SEM microscopy); then the items are particularly prone to rupture just in correspondence of the laser marking sites. The same tools from competitors have a laser marking which is lighter in color and appearance and above all free from cracks and defects.
Are there some guidelines for the laser marking on zirconia based products?

Just follow physics. The higher the energy, the faster the engraving, the less heat transfer, the less distortion, the less cracking.
