Hard chrome finish on 316 stainless

January 7, 2010

Hello

I am looking to produce a laser etched (scaled) measuring device from 316 stainless. In order to produce a more scratch resistant finish I am looking at hard chrome plating. Is this possible/advisable? If so what is involved? I am currently in prototype phase of development.

Thanks

Yes. Many high quality measuring devices are hard chrome plated to a matte finish. Plain or hardened steels are more common than stainless though.
