ELECTROLESS NICKEL SLIDING CONTACT

We are using a Ring made out of En 31 hardened on which a very light piece touches and rotates. Limitation of speed of rotation of the piece over the ring by sliding exist and initial running time to be given to reduce surface finish. So to increase speed and initial reduction of time for higher finish by rubbing, and reduce sliding friction, we coated Electroless nickel plating on the ring to 20 micron. In a short time coating peeled off. We like to know what is the resistance offered by Electroless nickel plating in sliding contact and how to increase the life.

You have to solve the adhesion problem first. What were the processing steps used in the plating process? Then you can plate a composite coating of teflon and nickel, perhaps.

Thanks for your letter dated 02.08.2000. Our reply is as follows : Process consists of depositing smooth, bright nickel phosphorous alloy coating by chemical reduction without electric current. The electroless nickel deposit has a phosphorous content of 7% by weight. The surface finish before the process is 0.25 RA.
