I want to darken a piece of steel sheet as a fire back in a gas fired domestic setting

December 22, 2009

I am a householder seeking a neat and affordable solution, my apologies if this is outside the site's scope.
Brick/ceramic fire backs tend to crack and discolor with over time, much to the disappoinment of the proud housewife.
A thin, treated and resistant steel surface could be prefabricated or be malleable enough to fit into a new or existing fireplace.
A pilot study should readily decide the fabricability and lifetime expectancy of such sheet metal....

Indeed, Alan, neat and affordable solutions are outside of the site's scope. We only suggest sloppy and expensive approaches :-)

But really, a black oxided surface on the steel should be a good start to it starting and staying generally black. Good luck.
