Fastener nomenclature question
What are the meanings of the four digit numbers in fasteners? Ex: 4140

While the context can change meaning, whenever I see "4140" in a parts specification I first consider that it refers to the steel alloy used to make the part. 4140 is a common designation for an alloy steel in North American designation systems. If that makes sense within the context of your question, it's the meaning I'd give most credence to.
