Residential application of stainless and galvanized
December 5, 2009
Hi there I am buiding a high efficiency wood fire place insert into a traditional coal buring fireplace of a 140 yr old home. The insert calls for a flexible 6" double walled stainless steel lilner to be place in the existing clay tile flue. My question is, because of the configuration I have a point where the liner is pressed up a against / around a rough edged clay brick; if I place a piece of galvanized heating duct between the two will the liner and heating duct have a negative / corrosive reaction to each other? If so, which will fail and is there a time line?
Thanks for your time.

Hi, Phil. These things are hard to predict. If it stays dry there is probably no issue. If the rain comes down the chimney and wets the joint, the galvanized steel will sacrificially corrode, probably over a period of a few years.
