Painting (and gold burnishing?) a brass and glass coffee table

Hi all - Am trying to redecorate on a strict budget, as our 1965 box of a house requires so very many expensive structural improvements--not much left for the "pretties".

My mother-in-law gave me her old bright brass & glass coffee table. It has good bones, and goes very well in our living room. . I plan to spray paint it black w/ Rustoleum's Hammered Finish. I've done this with our old coffee table, a sofa table and 17-year old chandelier (all formerly bright brass). They all look great, but I've wondered if I could do some sort of subdued metallic burnish on them to warm them up. . . I tried doing so on the old coffee table, which we just gave away today, and it was heinous!

I used Rustoleum's oil-based metallic gold canned paint. I tried stippling, then ragging off (harsh & spotty!), then I tried to brush only the edges, then w/ barely any paint on the brush, to paint the faintest of brush marks. All of these techniques resulted in disappointment and bad taste!

Any suggestions on technique? Color? Our living room is eclectic. . kind of casual French country. .

Thanks for any help you can offer. ..
