How to handle fabricating in one shop, shipping, and then powder coating in another shop

November 19, 2009

We are fabricating sheet metal steel assemblies at one shop, then transporting them cross country to another shop where they are powder coated. We are doing this to insure consistency of color as we are getting parts from a number of fabricators. Our concern is how to finish/prime/protect these parts at the fabricators so they survive the shipping and possibly storage time unpainted.

Is there a primer that we could use?

Is there a simple surface treatment that we could use?

Some kind of water soluble oil, don't put anything on that will be hard for the coater's to remove before they can paint. This might even be a good question to ask them.

Sr.
We do the same issue (send products unpainted per costumer requirements, but we send the pieces with a wet paint rich zinc primer). My question is your coater isn't shotblasting the product?

Dear Bruce,
There is a waterborne anti corrosive primer that was formulated specifically for use under powder and which may meet with your requirements. I will send you details.
