I would like to harden brass wire of 0.6 mm after it has been strung
November 14, 2009
As a form of design I would like to string and twist brass wire of
0.6 mm with glass beads.
I would then like to harden it , so it will maintain the shape formed.
To what temperature should I bring it, and how?
Will the glass beads be damaged assuming the Beads are just glass
(czech fire polished no gold or AB or anything, clean glass).
Thanks.

The only way to harden brass is to work it by hammering or bending. Heat will only make it softer. There are some look alike metals that can be hardened. They look like brass but they aren't. They are also very expensive!

Good news-there are some copper alloys that can be heat hardened and two phase aluminum bronze is one of them(min. 10% aluminum, rest copper).
Very good article on that subject: www.keytometals.com/Article71.htm
Hope it helps and good luck!

Q. I would like to know how to manipulate brass wire after shaping into a bracelet, to make it look like it is almost "melted" or dripped onto the form. I have seen this at craft shows, but have no idea how they do it.
Thanks,
