Mineral sludge dryers and capacity

October 25, 2009

Dear all,

Since I saw some fervent discussions on this forum, I was sure to receive feedback if I were to pose a question, so here it goes:

I am looking to dry mineral sludge that contains roughly 25% zinc, 30% water, 0.4% cadmium, 0.4% arsenic, very low sulfur. This is sludge that has remained post processing of zinc ore.

The reason of drying is to reduce humidity to a shippable level, both because at 30% ships won't accept it, but also to save on transportation costs.

My question is therefore, what are my options, what are environmental factors I need to consider, what is the maximum capacity and the energy costs to be considered (I am looking to dry circa 1000 tons per day btw), and is this project doable or not really.

One alternative that has been presented is a rotary kiln, but given the source I am not too keen on it. I appreciate any response or further suggestions.

Regards,
