Can aluminum extrusion framed wall system be used in a galvanizing plant?
Q. Our company is a manufacturer of translucent wall panel systems for commercial applications, and we have had an inquiry regarding an application on a galvanizing plant. My question is this: Can an aluminum-framed system be installed into this plant and not be subject to adverse chemical reactions?

A. Galvanizing plants have large tanks of acid, often open topped to atmosphere inside the plant. Geoff Crowley Crithwood Ltd. Westfield, Scotland, UK September 18, 2009 A. What you should be concerned about is the fumes from the pickle tank. Sulfuric Acid doesn't fume anywhere near as much as Hydrochloric Acid (Muriatic Acid). You could take a look at their existing installation to see what problems they have encountered in the recent past. Now, let me step up on my soapbox (thank you for the opportunity) and say a few words. Zinc platers and galvanizers are in business primarily to put zinc on steel to prevent it from rusting. And yet, when you go into almost all platers and almost all galvanizers, you see exposed steel - rusting, and in many cases (due to hydrochloric acid fumes and condensation) rusting badly. I never thought this made any sense at all. Tom Rochester CTO - Jackson, Michigan, USA Plating Systems & Technologies, Inc. September 18, 2009 |
