Guarantee for painted product
September 15, 2009
Dear All,
Good Day to you
could you please help us to identify a guarantee for painted product
(coil coated steel)
where the next items are required:
- The minimum life (year) before fading in rural weather.
- The minimum life (year) before corrosion.
- What are your recommendations?
Our product specs:
- Apply a layer of organic passivation. (thickness around 0.5 micron)
- Apply top coat with primer (total thickness around 25 micron)
- Gloss of painted steel around 30%.
steel - Cairo, Egypt
Hi, Salah. Sorry, but I would not issue a guarantee without a real-life exterior fading and corrosion test. It is too risky. Come over to Atlantic City or Las Vegas and enjoy the hospitality of our casinos, because you can make small bets there rather than making a wild bet that risks the whole future of your company :-) Aren't you glad you are not the company who guaranteed this bright red "Stop Sign"? I guess somebody miscalculated the UV inhibitor :-) Regards, Ted Mooney, P.E. Striving to live Aloha finishing.com - Pine Beach, New Jersey September 2009 |

I suggest that you should proceed very carefully.
Your letter suggests that you have good control of the painting process but time to fading can only be guaranteed by the paint manufacturer. You have very strong sun in Egypt. I began to fade after a few hours at Abu Simbel!
You would need an agreed standard of comparison to define fading and what assurance have you that the standard will not change after a few years? These are the questions that make lawyers rich.
If you proceed, I believe that your best course may be to find an insurance company to underwrite the risks. What happens if in ten years all your paint fails? Insurance companies are used to calculating these risks - and charging for them.
Meanwhile I would put out a few test panels. In the worst case you will know the answer in ten years.

Geoffs right, how can you give your customers a better guarantee than the manufacturer of the paint gives you?(I'll bet they only give you a year)
