Are home made pickling techniques (galvanized nails soaked in vinegar) Toxic?

I am attempting to refinish furniture for the pending arrival of my baby. I was reading on the internet that pickling wood was originally a process and not a stain. My husband and I are attempting to refinish our baby furniture utilizing this age old technic. The process is to soak galvanized nails in vinegar in bulk on eBay or Amazon [affil links] for 2-3 days. Then apply to furniture same as you would stain. Before we start the staining process we want to make certain this will be safe for our little bundle of joy. You may also want to know we are planning to use a finishing coat atop of this homemade product. We are attempting to get an aged look to the wood. Thank you in advance for your help.

What you are actually doing by leaving galvanised nails in vinegar is creating zinc acetate. This compound is not particularly harmful, but can be a slight irritant by respiration and ingestion. The brew you want to concoct will smell of vinegar and this may annoy your baby. He/she will also come into close contact with it whilst in the cot, so perhaps you should reconsider your ideas. You may also want to talk with your pediatrician about the idea.
