Blistering on Metal Button (Antique Silver)
July 22, 2009
Our product Metal Button had problem Blistering on Antique Silver. Material die casting zinc alloy. Process flow : Die Casting, Polish (abrasive material and WC104), Plating Copper(Copper Cyanide, Sodium Cyanide, Roselt Salt, Porassium Hydroxide), Plating Nickel Free (Sodium Cyanide, Copper Cyanide, Potassium Hydroxide, Potassium Carbonate, Zinc Cyanide), Plating Black Oxide (Potassium Pyrophosphate, Cobalt Sulphate, Stannuous Pyrophosphate, Ammonia), Polish and Lacquer. Which process had great possibillity caused blistering? For other material (brass and steel), plating condition is normal not found blistering. Also for die cast with plating other color (Nickel free only), blistering defect is small quantity.

Try baking the zinc die castings prior to plating and it should solve your blistering problems.
225 degrees farenheight for 20 minutes minimum.
Let me know if this works for you it worked very well for us when we had a similar problem.
