Specification for zinc nickel plating?
Q. I have had a commercial shop plate 24 coil springs (about 2"x6") with "Zinc Nickel Plate Type II". The springs look like they may have been chemically cleaned (the painted color codes are gone), but they do not look like anything was plated on them. I would like to read a spec on the process, and also would like to know what the physical appearance should be after such plating.

A. Zinc-nickel would look a lot like bright zinc plating, i.e., reflective. Further, both zinc plated parts and zinc-nickel plated parts are invariably chromated. The chromates for zinc-nickel are a somewhat funny red-ish or purple-ish iridescent and almost impossible to miss. I think I'd agree with you that these parts may not have been plated at all :-(

Q. Hi,
I am looking for a specification (ISO or similar) for zinc nickel. The motor industry seems to have their own specifications but what does the man in the street ask for?
Thanks!
Best regards

A. Trudy,
No idea why the man on the street would ask anything about this but it is AMS2417 that you are after. Do take note of the looseness of this specification. The allowable nickel content range is quite broad (too broad in my opinion) and the AMS spec also needs to be updated to include a tri-Cr seal coat option (versus the less environmentally acceptable hex-Cr called out by the default "Type II" designation).
If contracting out for this coating, the purchase order ought to include a supplement to the AMS spec that requires the coating source use a "high-nickel" variety of 2417 (typically ~12% nickel from an alkaline based chemistry) AND to use an acceptable tri-Cr based seal coat (conversion coat).
Hope this help,
TRH

Q. Hello I have a part here calling for a zinc nickel spec that I have not seen before. Does anyone have some insight to this specification 015-009-056. Any help would be great.

Sorry Steven, that doesn't look anything like any spec that I can think of. I'll bet it's an internal spec.
