5% Neutral salt spray testing of assembled plated parts

June 5, 2009

Neutral salt spray testing of plated parts as an assembled unit is undertaken in an auto unit. What is the correctness of the test for white corrosion hrs.since parts in an assembly may withhold condensed fog against the ASTM 117 Standard? What is generally the evaluation procedure for an assembly?

Hey Ram

As you aware the white rust is directly proportional to the passivation layer which is very thin layer (less than 1 micron) and the passivation layer definitely will affected during assembly. Hence, there should not be any white rust requirement for assembly parts in Salt spray test. Only base metal corrosion can be evaluated.

Hello Ramajayam

White rust is mainly depend on passivation layer which is very thin layer will be affected by handling during assembly. Hence, evaluation of white rust in salt spray test on assembled part normally not acceptable. For assembly level testing we have to look for the base metal corrosion only
