How to coat ID of borosilicate tube with titanium?

May 27, 2009

I need to coat a 6" long borosilicate tube with a 2 mm ID with Ti.

Actually, I'm not sure the Ti will do the job. I'm actually trying to get air to not stick to the tube. Ti will keep the water in the tube from sticking. What I'm trying to accomplish is to keep the air bubbles in the water from sticking.

I suppose you need to increase the wetability of the inside surface. Titanium coating may not be the best way and it may not be possible to the coating. Plasma polymerisation on the inside surface may help. Then you would have to produce a plasma inside the tube which could again be difficult but worth trying. One can try both RF and DC discharges. It would be an interesting project!

Look into fire-polishing the glass.

Fire polished glass is so smooth, heterogeneous nucleation (i.e. of bubbles) won't occur.
