Electroless Nickel versus Zinc Dichromate

April 24, 2009

I would like to know if anyone has done a study into the comparison of Electroless Nickel versus Zinc Dichromate as a plating finish. We have plated parts in similar locations to each other in a drive and some a plated with electroless nickel and others with zinc dichromate.

What are the main benefits and issues with both plating types? The main concern is to achieve ASTM B117. How does cost compare for both?

We are also looking into a Zinc/Iron coating process so I would really appreciate any help here....

You are comparing apples and watermelons. Zinc is relatively soft and prevents red rust by being sacrificial. EN is relatively very hard and prevents red rust by being a barrier layer.
Zinc is significantly cheaper, but I would question its use on gears unless the gears are in an oil bath or heavily greased.
