Difference between RoHS black zinc and RoHS clear zinc finish

March 31, 2009

Hello, my name is Hank, and I am a quality engineer with a company located in California. Our company is currently designing a new product, and we are debating the type of screw we should use. We all agree on zinc plated screws for resistance to corrosion, so the debate is on which of the zinc plated screws we should use.

My boss had previously bad experience with black zinc plating (handling), therefore he is pushing hard for regular zinc screw. However, marketing is insisting on black zinc for appearance. The only way for either marketing or quality to capitulate is if there is significant difference in corrosion resistance between the two. Unfortunately, none of us know much about the difference between the two zinc plating process, just a general statement that regular zinc process is better.

My question is "What is the difference between ROHS black zinc and ROHS clear zinc plating in term of corrosion resistance? Where can I find articles about this topic?"
