Material of construction for galvanizing baskets

Hi All,

My name is Karu I am running a galvanizing plant where we galvanize fasteners.
My problem is we are using M.S Baskets for the dipping in kettle.
with that we are loosing lot of zinc and we are higher on Dross percent.
Please give me your valuable suggestions to improve our consumption.

Dear Sir,

Haynes 556 alloy is a iron-nickel-chromium-cobalt alloy.I think iron in this alloy will react with the zinc which further makes a coating. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Regards,

Karu

First of two simultaneous responses --

You will get reasonable service from using a very low Si steel. Look for Si = trace.

Then please accept this as a correction :)

The fact that the alloy contains iron is not relevant. It is a single-phase material, and therefore the properties of the individual constituents do not apply - the properties of the whole alloy may be (and in this case certainly are) quite different from the properties of any of its constituents.

Haynes 556 is well-proven as the best available material for your application.

Sir:

One galvanizer used the SAME Haynes 556 alloy spin baskets for more than 20 years. When this company went out of business (for other reasons) they sold the Haynes baskets at a good price.

Another galvanizer has been using the same 556 alloy spin baskets for about 25 years. Keep in mind that Haynes 556 alloy is twice as strong as ordinary steel and retains 95% of its strength at the molten zinc temperature. Thus the baskets need only be 1/2 as thick as ordinary steel. You cannot cut this alloy with a torch and it is difficult to drill. It can be welded but I do not know the details.

Oridinary steel baskets need to be very low in silicon, phosphorus, and aluminum. The weld material must match the steel. Ordinary steel retains only 67% of its strength at the galvanizing temperature and is not very strong to start with.

Dear All,

Are there ways of keeping the baskets clean longer and thus requiring less stripping in flux or acid?

Dear Sir.

For Galvanizing kettle in India.. you will get steel from Steel Authority of India ltd.. Steel Grade known as "DSQ" Means dead soft quality ( low carbon and low silicon )
