Is unplated Gold worth anything?

I have a chance to buy some jewelry that was described as 14kt gold unplated. I can get it cheap, but is it going to bring me the same amount of money as 14kt gold that has been plated, if it is going to be sold as scrap?

If you are going to buy this gold from a hermit who is living in a cave and not exposed to the constant bombardment of ads from outfits offering to buy your scrap gold MAYBE it's a deal. But I wouldn't count on it.
