Must have no electrooating in this area
March 5, 2009
I have (2) small flat areas on one side of a metal stamping that a customer does not want to have e-coated. Its a high volume part so hand taping is not practical.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Dear Jeff... I have read your post several times and still can't make head or tail what you require. What coating are you attempting to use on the other side of the component as electrocoat is an immersion process. Powder coating and masking would be out of the question due to the high volumes of items you mention. The only answer would be a backward step and apply a liquid coating by spray (would only coat one side). What is the query re tapping? If you can describe in greater detail your current process... coating and die tapping it may result in answers more helpful to you than I can be at this moment.

Without seeing what the part looks like, the best suggestion I can think of if hand-taping is impractical is to build the mask into the rack. Two small "pads" of silicone (likely requiring a molded part of some kind that can be both removed and replaced) that are attached to the rack, and then press onto the stamping in the right spots when the metal part is racked in place.

Does the part have to be e-coated? If the part could be sprayed, then a jig could be manufactured to mask those areas. Spray coaters with chain-on-edge lines can typically handle large volumes.
