Centerless grinding of hard chrome

February 14, 2009

We have been asked to look at a job centerless grinding hard chromed steel bars. The material od is 7/8" to 1-11/16" and 20" to 10' in length. Hardness of the chrome is 70-72 Rc. Total amount to grind is .005-.008. From what info I could find .0002-.0003 per pass, slow feed and a soft/medium aluminum oxide wheel is the norm. We have a #2EA Cincinnati centerless grinder with a 20" x 6" x 12" green silicon carbide wheel. Told the wheel will work-just wear faster. Problem is we have no experience with this material and I don't want to take on a big headache. Any suggestion? Does the grinding info sound right?
Thanks for any help

The major wheel mfg's have a tech service that will give you the information you need for your equipment.
They are your best source of information.
Your 2 tenths per pass is good. You need lots of cutting fluid flow or it will burn and peel.
The least rejects and the least wheel cost and the least machine time requires the correct grit, correct grit size and correct binder (glue that holds the wheel together) Anything less will cost you money in the long run and it will go thru wheels.
