RoHS compliance in chem film for aluminum

My customers are asking for RoHS compliant chem film on aluminum parts. My plating shop says that means to use clear chem film instead of gold. Is that correct?

RoHS compliant chem film is clear.
We use Luster On Luminescent.

RoHS compliance is not color dependent. Consider finding a shop that knows the requirements, and is using materials capable of producing a RoHS compliant finish. Ask your supplier the questions your customer will ask of you.

Most yes. The trivalent conversion coatings for aluminum are anywhere from clear to light gray in color. Any other color is generally the result of post process dye dips and will reduce corrosion protection.

Some non chromate replacements do have other colors although I have only heard of one which is yellow

Gene Packman

No, it means you must use trivalent chromate and not hexavalent chromate. The commercial trivalent chromates, however, do produce an almost "clear" coating, maybe slightly purple tint that some would call clear.

Elaborating, clear chromate can be hex or tri, RoHS must be tri.

Your plater is partly correct. Some clear chromating solution do contain hexavalent chromium and are not RoHS compliant. There are Trivalent Chromating process (TCP) which is clear/
RoHS compliant.
Most gold chromating process are hexavalent chromium base and are not RoHS compliant. If you check out some of the postings here, there are yellow coloured chromating process which are RoHS compliant. They are actually clear chromating + yellow dye.

A. The TCP based ROHS complying passivation is almost clear.
Look for a Permanganate based passivation which is yellow-brownish.
