Does X15TN Stainless Steel need to be passivated, if so what "group" does it fit into?

February 5, 2009

I am considering the use of X15TN Stainless Steel. I have read the threads about passivation of 440C SS and I have read the ASTM's that cover passivation. I don't have enough experience to know what "Group" X15TN would fit in for passivation processes, or if it needs to be passivated at all. I did a search for the X15TN material, but only found a couple of threads.

Is there anyone who might be able to point me in the right direction?

Thank you in advance.

John,
I've not been able to match X15TN with any of the grade I'm familiar with, but judging by the alloy chart at http://www.schanz-messer.de/en/steelchart.php I'm guessing it's a martensitic grade, like the AISI 400 group. (Some sites refer to the X15TN as AISI 420 MOD.) You probably do want to passivate your parts then. Let us know if we can help.
