Looking for the best/easiest way to patina several very large brass pieces

February 4, 2009

The pieces of my solid brass gooseneck shower and shower curtain ring are too large and awkward to patina in an oven or dip in a patina solution. I am wondering if someone could recommend a good method for creating a dark aged brass finish on these large pieces.

The hardware is all shiny brass and will be used in wet conditions. I am unsure if there is a protective finish on the brass; however, I don't mind sanding/steel wooling off the surface. (I do not want a shiny brass or green finish).

I experimented with one smaller piece: used fine grit sandpaper and steel wool to remove I tried wiping a brass ager on it and leaving it for 15 minutes -- this did not work. I also tried to patina the piece by wiping 20% vinegar in bulk on eBay or Amazon [affil links] on it... it turned part of it slightly green and part slightly darker.
