Plated gold ornaments gets black or brown on handling or exposure to atmosphere

February 4, 2009

I am Dr.J.Ravichandran working as lecturer in a college in the state of Tamil Nadu in INDIA. A local jeweler came to me with a problem stating that 22 carat gold ornaments when plated with gold gets a brownish black colour on handling and a bit slowly on storage. They use conventional methods and add amber and plnat resigns^plant resins for getting brightness. How the problem can be solved. Also I would like to know the role of amber and resigns^resins in gold plating. Kindly suggest me some reference material on this subject.
Thanking You
Sincerely yours
Ravichandran

I don't know what you mean by "amber" and "plnat resigns" could you please check your spelling? If the objects are plated in 22k gold, either the purity of the gold deposit is very poor or the gold thickness is so thin that the underlayer is migrating right through the gold. What is the metal under the gold? You would have to get more information from the jeweler in order for us to help you.
