Etching mild steel tubing for good adhesion of urethane coating

Q. I need to etch the surface of tubing so I can apply a urethane coating, currently I am sandblasting the tube to give the primer something to bite to. I would like to get away from sandblasting, any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

A. Probably abrading its surface in a belt sander equipped with a coarse grain.

A. SIMPLE! Do Zinc Phosphating if the components can be dipped, or other spray phosphating techniques are available, find out in your area of operation.

But the answer is Zinc Phosphating
