Plating to Meet 1000 Hours of Salt Spray?

September 15, 2008

We supply automotive parts to some of the OEMs in Europe. Recently, we received an enquiry from one of our customers for new business. However, the part must meet 1000 hours of salt spray test.
Please suggest what kind of plating will meet this specification. The plating chemical should be free from all heavy metals.

Thanks and Regards,
Venkatesh

Mr.Venkatesh,

Please specify whether SST hours for WR or RR. Reg heavy metals free then it should be trivalent chromate. Also any specific chromate colour requirement.

Dear Mr. Venkatesh,

Zinc-Nickel plating with minimum 10 micron thickness followed by trivalent passivation and top-coat will give you 1000 hours to red rust.

Alternatively you can try zinc-rich dip-spin coating which gives 1000 hours SST.

Both the above process will meet the ROHS requirement.

HI SIR,
I think alkaline zinc-iron plating followed by trivalent black passivation and sealant will give you 1000 hrs SST. Try with that.
Good luck.

Dear Venkatesh,

Please tell what the colour of finish you need. There are zinc rich paints which give more than 1000 hours easily. That comes in grey and black colours.

Dear Venkatesh,
Based on the part application we need to select the surface Treatment. we will do Zinc Alloy plating,Organic Coating(Ex-Geomet,Zintek) and Nylon Based powder Coating, or Paint in CED/Spray method we will do.
Is the thickness is low only possibility Plating with proper method, Thickness is not a problem we will go for Nylon Based powder coating. You will get all type's of Surface treatment supplier's In Chennai.
Is you are selecting the organic or powder coating. please do the Zinc plating with out passivation and then do the organic or paint coating
