Zinc plating vs Steel thickness
Hello all,
I have read in a specification that it is not recommended to zinc-plate steel if the thickness of steel is under 2mm (0.08 inch).
I wonder why ?
Thanks for your comments.

Hi, Bernard. Can you source that statement or put it in a context? It doesn't sound right to me.

Hello Ted,
One of our old internal specifications about Zinc Electroplating says
(sorry for the translation...) :
"Zinc Electroplating is forbidden on parts and wires with a thickness under 1mm if only one surface is treated and 2mm if both sides are treated"...
But no more explanations...
That's why I wonder why such a prohibition.
Best regards,
Bernard

Thanks, Bernard. We'll have to wait for someone else to chime in because I've never heard of this.

Hello Bernard,
well, it seems it is just a shortcut of a whole text of a norm. It is depending which kind of zinc are going to be used due of internal stress oy the deposit. Either way, today's electrolytes are adjusted so you can use zinc plating on whatever thickness of substrates.

Hi Ted and Dominik,
Thanks for your answers. The text was not a shortcut, it was in the preliminary advices...
I see no reason for it... I thought about hydrogen embrittlement but internal stresses could be a right way too...
No matter and thanks again !
