Is Cadmium the same as Tin-Zinc alloy?

August 13, 2008

I received order cadmium/Fluorocarbon Coat plating my customer : in condition
"specified by the ASTM B766 requirements. The plating applied to the bolting components contain not less than 98.5 % cadmium and shall be free from all mercury. The total impurities excluding zinc and nickel shall not exceed 0.5 %. The plating thickness shall be heavy cadmium plated in accordance with ASTM A165 Type NS excepting that thicker plating is acceptable provided it does not compromise thread"
but I don't know how.
My country haven't cadmium plating, what coating replacement by provided it?

Hi, Inthira. Don't even THINK about doing that. In this country it could land you in the penitentiary :-)

Substitution and replacement technology is for the SPECIFIER to concern himself with, not the applicator. You don't know why cadmium was specified, and which properties of cadmium are essential for this specific application. If the specifier is not as technically knowledgeable as the plating shop, it's great to explain the situation and make recommendations, and get the spec changed, but you must plate in full accordance with the specification. Good luck.
