Vacuum impregnation of CF3M,Duplex/Super-Duplex SS Castings

July 30, 2008

Will Vacuum Impregnation of CF3M,Duplex and Super Duplex Stainless Steel Investment Castings give me Better Corrosion Resistance in Sea Water Applications?
I guess it has to be done after Heat Treatment and full machining is complete, i.e., last operation?
Also we are sand blasting the castings after machining-drawing requirement.

Our Typical testing Requirements are
ASTM A262 -- Practice A, C, E
ASTM G48-11 -- Practice A, 50 °C, 24 hrs
Ferrite Content

doubts...doubts..
As of now,I consider that only Correct Chemical Composition and Correct Heat Treatment Procedure is sufficient to give us the 'ideal' Duplex/Super Duplex Castings -- am I correct?
Will Vacuum Impregnation actually make a significant improvement?
WHAT I ACTUALLY NEED: Fantastic Corrosion Resistance in Sea Water Applications (no wear or impact loading) for our castings which should help them to survive 'Life Long'! (How about, say, 10-20 years?) Am I expecting too much?
I really appreciate the valuable advice that I get on This Forum. It is an education.
Thanks in Advance.

For Duplex-Super Duplex the testing standards are ASTM A923-08 methods A and C.

Will be highly obliged if any of you can throw some light on my query. If the answer is in the affirmative then I am willing to experiment!
