Removing chrome plating from plastic




Hi ; Have a car with chromed hard plastic small parts --Is there a way to De-chrome the plastic ? Thanks !

Hi, Bob. The first problem is that just because something is shiny doesn't necessarily mean it's chrome plated; it could be vacuum metallizing, sputtering, or chrome-look paint. The next thing is, if it is chrome plated, do you need to remove just the chrome or also the nickel plating under that, and the copper plating under that, and the electroless nickel plating under that?

Where I'm going is: yes, it's possible, but it may be a lot more practical to try to buy new unplated replacement parts.
