Searching for a "perfect" leveling agent
July 2, 2008
Esteemed Colleagues,
In "Ni & Cr Plating" by Dennis & Such, Chapter 5 on Bright Ni Plating (page 102 in the Third Edition) the authors listed the following names of three "sulphobetaine" leveling agents that they recommend i.e:
1. pyridinum propyl sulphonate aka (1-(3-sulphopropyl) pyridinum betaine (Figure 5.3),
2. sodium allyl sulphonate,and
3. sodium vinyl sulphonate.
Does anyone of you have any experience with these reagents? Which one of the levelers would you personally recommend? What would be the dosage(s) and possible side effects? So far, I tried Coumarin & Thiourea, and both of these have a lot of negative side effects. Could you suggest anything better, less expensive and more reliable. You will save me a lot of time & tedious experimental work.
Any suggestions, hints and tips will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance,

Hi, Tad. Am I correct in assuming that you realize that other researchers have already put their decades in, and are selling their results as proprietary addition agents? You are certainly most welcome to join the fray and develop and market your own -- but if you are engaged in this development effort as an end user, you should know that you can buy what you need.
