Poor adhesion of titanium nitride on carbide inserts

We are manufacturing cutting / forming tools with carbide inserts. After the part is finished we send it for Titanium Nitride coating using PVD system. The problem is that after coating the carbide inserts tend to come off easily. We also manufactured some zigs but still the problem remains. The parts perform extremely well without the coating but the customer requires the titanium nitride coating.

Please suggest.....

It sounds like the braze is failing in the elevated temperature/vacuum of the TiN process. A higher temp braze might be needed. Talk to your braze vendor.

I assume you're brazing the inserts to the tool. TiN is done at very high substrate temperatures -- around 450 °C -- so your braze is being compromised. Have the inserts TiN coated before you mount them.
