How to refinish old kitchen chair legs made of steel/aluminum

I have a camp and really old kitchen furniture came with out. The table is the formica with the leave attached underneath. I have three different sets of kitchen chairs. The legs are pitted and rusted and the seats and backs are ripped. I get mixed answers about the legs. Are the marks the beauty or should I clean them up? I would like to clean them up but don't know where to start. My husband said I'll never do anything with them. Help me surprize him.

Hi, Bernie. You need to know whether they are steel or aluminum, which can be easily determined with a magnet. There is no accounting for taste so you have to decide what you want them to look like. Paint is usually the best option. Good luck with it.
