Possible to gold flash then hard chrome?

May 23, 2008

hello everyone ,

I meet some problems, one of our customers needs electroplate on the surface of brass (CuZn39Pb3):

1).gold flash (layer thickness <=0.1µm, then hard chrome---build-up layer
2).hard chrome ,the layer thickness is 0.5±0.1µm ---protective layer

Is it possible to meet customer's requirements ? if you know, could you please give me some guide and instructions ? many thanks in advance for your assistance!

Regards,
Liu

Hi, Andy. Yes, I think it is possible to apply the two plating layers described. However, this plating sequence may or may not achieve what your customer has in mind.

Do you have any idea of the intended functionality? It sounds like a mess and possibly illegal as a jewelry finish, and a disaster as an electronic finish :-)

But this is all a guess based on my own inexperience with such a finish; it may be a well developed finish for this customer. Still, I would not call 0.5 micrometers of chrome "hard chrome" -- this is the thickness of a decorative chrome finish. Good luck.
