Protective coating for aluminum exposed to high pressure oxygen

May 23, 2008

I'm looking for a suitable coating to protect aluminum exposed to high pressure 3500 psi (238 bar). Any suggestions?
Thanks,
John

Hi, John. What hobby employs 3500 psi oxygen? Greater detail on what you are doing is often required for useful answers because, for example, no one wants to propose a coating system that offers the possibility of embrittling, or thinning the aluminum, or reduction of fatigue strength, or chipping off and clogging a life-critical regulator, etc., etc., when we can't envision what you are doing.

It's being used for scuba diving. I'm trying make some light weight regulators to reduce the pressure from 3-3500 psi to around 100 psi. Making the regulators is not a problem, but one to handle the high pressure oxygen is. Using aluminum would reduce the weight by 4-6 lbs.
Thanks,
John

I've been a scuba diver for 25 years and never used compressed oxygen, only air.
Some divers (not normally hobby divers) use mixtures of oxygen and helium, but I think pure oxygen would be dangerous to health.

Are you sure it's Oxygen you've got in those bottles?

Yes it is oxygen. It's used in both a rebreather where it is mixed with a suitable diluent for depth and for decompression at a depth of 20 ft or less.
Anyway.......so no one knows of a suitable coating?
Thanks,
John

ProtectaClear is a clear protective coating which has excellent adhesion to aluminum and is highly resistant to salts and chlorine. I would be happy to coat one or two of your aluminum pieces for you to test.
