Need corrosion resistant agent against heated Inconel

April 22, 2008

Our workshop operates wear-resistant coating for metal and plastic item. One of our customers asked us if we can give this coating on an Inconel plate, which is heated at 760 °C for continuous 100 hours. Normally we carry out coating under the temperature of 250 degrees.

We put an Inconel plate into the furnace and gave heat treatment at 760 degrees for 4 days. After taking it out, we checked the plate under a microscope and found small dots of rust on the surface. The customer has approved the coating but he was not happy about the rust. Now he is asking us to get rid of this rust. It must have been generated under this extraordinary setting. We wonder if there is any solution to this problem.

Deasr KAZU,

Rust is taking place onto the bare Inconel surface; i.e. that your coating is pourous (typically). So, use, first, a bonding coating to protect the Inconel from this degenerative process. One more suggestion: incease furnace temperature to melt totally the coating powder. Period.
